Hannah, take a look at Vogue magazine covers again. The majority of them are with plain backgrounds, the models always look at the camera, the lighting is very controlled as it would be on a set. Perhaps you could rethink the magazine you chose in order to have the image fit. The feature stories are pretty light as well - Vogue has many more and the cover is designed with that in mind.
